041/365:2010 Robed and Ready

Today was the first time I had my robes on this year! Taken in the Vestry just before I went in to lead the midweek traditional Morning Prayer service.

As well as my 'Presbyterian blue' shirt and clerical collar, I've got my cassock, surplice and preaching scarf. Keeps you warm on a cold morning!

  1. So, not being CoI, what determines whether you wear your robes or not?

  2. And why are yours this colour when Tom Keightley's are green? (or is he just my favourite loose canon?)

  3. Questions, questions!

Ali, in our parish, we don't wear robes normally in order to be equivalent to the congregation and not marked out as 'different' or 'special' or 'weird' based on what we're wearing. So it's a mission decision. The only times we wear the robes are for funerals (pastoral situations) and for the Traditional midweek service with the 1662 liturgy.

Sunday mornings and evenings are more contemporary, and so we only wear clerical collar in the morning (when we're more likely to have visitors), and do without it at night.

Wils, Tom Keightley is a Canon of Down Cathedral, so his cassock is green. Every cathedral has it's own colour (e.g. St Anne's is blue, Down is green, Dromore, Lisburn and Armagh are red). Apart from the canons, us lowly ministers have the black cassock.
